Who We Are
Alma Lit is a micro literary magazine devoted to publishing short, lyrical nonfiction from migrant, underrepresented, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ voices. We seek soul-filled stories—250 words or less—that explore race, justice, memory, identity, and resistance. We believe in the power of micro essays to cut deep and shine bright, giving voice to the truths often silenced. At Alma, the personal is political, the poetic is radical, and every word carries weight.
Submissions and Guidelines
We accept original micro nonfiction—250 words or less—that pulses with soul. We’re drawn to work that is lyrical, intimate, and grounded in the lived experiences of BIPOC, migrant, diasporic, and marginalized writers. We want the truth told beautifully: essays that whisper like a prayer or crack open like thunder. Show us your inner compass, your cultural fragments, your fierce tenderness.
Surprise us. Shake us. Make us remember.
We read year-round. Simultaneous submissions are fine; just let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere. We do not publish poetry or AI-generated work.
What are we looking for?
Lyrical, not abstract. We love poetic language, but we want the meaning to land. Use metaphor, music, and rhythm—but ground it in feeling, body, memory, or place.
Rooted in identity. Whether explicitly or in undertone, your piece should carry the imprint of your voice, your background, your worldview. We welcome code-switching, cultural specificity and migrant language.
Concise and cutting. With just 250 words or less, every sentence must earn its place. A single line can do the work of a paragraph. Let your piece breathe—but also let it bleed.
Emotionally resonant. We want essays that haunt us, heal us, hold us. Your piece should leave the reader with a feeling that lingers—rage, tenderness, nostalgia, clarity, or some holy mix.
No savior narratives or trauma porn. You don’t need to bare all to be profound. Honor your story, your boundaries, and your community.
